Playful Playrooms, Creating a Space Full of Creativity and Storage

In recent years, when we began spending more time at home, it became critical to have a space dedicated to the kiddos in our lives and many playrooms became the perfect spot for a remodel to meet families ever adapting needs.  Dining rooms were abandoned for more usable kid friendly learning spaces, shelves to house books and toys were nestled into wall nooks and bins and bookcases began to line basement walls.

As you begin to get inspired by your first remodel project, or you kick-off yet another in you fun list of home DIY projects, thinking about all the members of your family and how to get the best use out of every space is essential.  Most parents agree that it’s fun to see the joy of their children learning through play but not as fun stepping on matchbox size cars and little building blocks at the end of the day.  What better way to have a space the whole family can enjoy than to create one that is both engaging and full of storage.

Selecting a neutral finish and tucking cabinetry into a wall bump out is an easy way to maximize space in a location that often goes unused.  Here we see the closed door, drawer and open shelving to house a variety of storage needs.  To accommodate the existing window, shorter drawer cabinets, perfect for a kid friendly height, were placed, flanked on either side by slightly taller closed-door storage making a great space to tuck away board games.

Opting for a warmer Maple Rye, the cabinetry shown here in this playful basement is a warm backdrop to a space dedicated to a growing family.  Perfect for storing a room full of playroom essentials, spaces were left open to quick grab-and-go bins topped with colorful cushions making the perfect reading nook.  Drawers were topped with low wall cabinet shelves providing flexibility to how the space can be used.  By keeping the layout simple and using a selection of storage types, this basement will grow with the changing needs of the family and can one day adapt to house teenage gaming systems or create the perfect space for an grown up work out space full of zen.  Designers agree that creating storage solutions that are adaptable is a great way to add value to your home and maximize your remodel investment.

Need storage solutions for your family but don’t have a place dedicated to a playroom?  Consider adding drawer banquet seating in your breakfast nook to house games that are at your finger-tips ready for a family game night.  Incorporating storage solutions, no matter how small, can give any space new life.
